Modern Notebook for April 27 - May 3, 2025

On the next Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Thomas Adès’s Powder Her Face has dazzled audiences for three decades. Its vivid Dances have long been part of the orchestral repertoire — but the composer’s revised Three-piece Suite has never had a commercial release. Now, in its anniversary year, that moment has come.

Then: Modern Notebook pays tribute to the late Sofia Gubaidulina, who passed away in March 2025. Her Triple Concerto explores three forces in music — attraction, repulsion, and the energy that binds them — all unfolding in a work of cosmic balance and depth.

Also featuring performances by violinist Davide Alogna and the London Symphony Orchestra with music by Nan Avant, flutist Taylor Irelan and pianist Andrea Feitl with music by Dominic Valadez, Crash Ensemble performing music by Kate Moore, pianist Michael Mizrahi with music by Sarah Kirkland Snider, guitarist Jacob Kellerman and BBC Philharmonic performing music by Toru Takemitsu, cellist Pierre Fontenelle with music by Mark Summer, yMusic performing music by Gabriel Kahane, and pianist Chen-Hui Jen with music by Chinary Ung.
