Modern Notebook for December 22, 2019

On the next Modern Notebook, we’ll take a trip to Scandinavia for the holiday season with a traditional Danish folk tune performed by the Danish String Quartet. Also, cosmic music from Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony, a masterwork which he simply describes as a “love song.” Featuring performances from violinist Kristin Lee and the Metropolis Ensemble, the Alias Chamber Ensemble, and more.

Hour 1

  • The Danish String Quartet performs traditional Scandinavian folk music, with flügelhorn soloist Mads la Cour.
  • Kenji Bunch‘s Drift.
  • The fifth movement of Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony: Joy of the Blood of the Stars.
  • Music by Vivian Fung inspired by her time in Bali: the Violin Concerto.
  • Pianists Eunmi Ko and Albert Kim perform music for piano four hands by Hilary Tann.
