Modern Notebook for November 17, 2019

On Modern Notebook this week, it’s a spectrum of compositions by living composers ranging from orchestral works, to music for percussion ensemble, and even a chamber ensemble work featuring voice and electronics. Plus, Tyler speaks with Benjamin D. Whiting of the group Null-state ahead of a performance of theirs on November 20th at USF.

Hour 1

  • A moment from David Lang‘s large scale work for solo violin, Mystery Sonatas.
  • Trifecta!, a clarinet, bassoon, and piano trio, performs the music of Nancy Galbraith.
  • Magnus Lindberg’s Arena II.
  • A work for 7 percussionists by Baljinder Sekhon called Refuge.
  • Emma O’Halloran‘s Constellations, a composition for voice, chamber ensemble, and electronics which samples a pop song from the 1990’s.


Hour 2

  • Beginning at 9 PM, Tyler will speak with Benjamin D. Whiting about an upcoming concert at USF featuring the group Null-state. Benjamin was recently appointed as Visiting Professor of Composition at the University of South Florida and is one half of a duo called Null-state, along with composer and flutist Melody Chua. Null-state presents immersive concerts centered around an instrument called the Chaosflöte, and they will be performing at Barness Recital Hall at the USF School of Music this coming Wednesday, November 20, at 7:30 PM.
  • Pianist Nicholas Phillips performs music by Gabriela Lena Frank.
  • Steven Mackey‘s work for double string quartet, Gaggle and Flock.
  • Deep Summer Music by Libby Larsen.
