Modern Notebook Interview: composers Josh Mallard and Jamie Koller (New-Music Consortium @ USF)

Original air date: November 1, 2020

Josh Mallard and Jamie Koller are both composers at the University of South Florida and both are part of the New-Music Consortium at USF: Josh is president of the student-led organization, and Jamie is the Public Relations representative. Earlier this year, the USF New Music Consortium was set to host their fourth bi-annual New Music Festival on the USF campus, welcoming 36 composers from all over the world to participate.

That in-person festival was postponed, and now the Consortium is set to present a virtual version of the festival over the course of the next six months or so, and will present the work of the selected composers. The first virtual event is this coming Saturday, November 7th.

Listen to Tyler’s conversation with Josh and Jamie below.

More information:

The New Music Consortium received about 400 submissions from 32 different countries throughout Asia, North America, South America, Oceania, and Europe. Invited composers were chosen through multiple rounds of adjudication by members of the consortium. Composers ranging from students to professional freelance and university professors will have works presented in the virtual concert series. This year would have marked the fourth installment of this biennial festival, which began in 2014, and a continuation of the long tradition of new music festivals at the University of South Florida, with past festivals including the Bonk Festival and Robert Helps Festival.

The virtual concert series will consist of three concerts containing works by participating composers. The concerts will be hosted on New Music Consortium’s Youtube page via livestream. The concert series will be accessible to the public. Concerts are to be streamed on the following dates:

  • Concert 1: November 7, 2020
  • Concert 2: January 9, 2021
  • Concert 3: March 6, 2021

All concerts at 7 PM Eastern Time.
