This Sunday, March 8, is International Women’s Day, and Modern Notebook will be celebrating with two hours of music composed by women composers, including music by Nina Simone, Kaija Saariaho, and Annika Socolofsky. Plus, a brand new piece by Susanna Hancock performed by ~Nois, and the entirety of Julia Wolfe’s Fire in My Mouth, a work that pays homage to the 100 young victims of the devastating Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911.

Hour 1
- Kaija Saariaho‘s Nocturne for solo violin.
- A new release from the group yMusic with music by Missy Mazzoli.
- Fodder on my Wings by Nina Simone.
- Music by Gabriela Lena Frank inspired by Peruvian textiles: Hilos, or Threads.
- A brand new piece for saxophone quartet by Susanna Hancock called HIATUS.
Hour 2
- a sense of who by Annika Socolofsky.
- Julia Wolfe‘s Fire in My Mouth.
Recent Shows
On the final episode of Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Hideaki Aomori’s Split stretches the bass clarinet to its limits, exploring the full breadth of its sound world. This hour also features Baljinder Sekhon’s Drifting Seeds for cello and harp, along with music by Anna Mieke, Vivian Fung, and more. Then: chamber music by Jessica Ackerley called Spark Surge — one of the highlights of the final hour. You’ll also hear Fumiko Miyachi’s piano duo Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Strange Charm , alongside music by Shirish Korde, Oliver Knussen, and others. Also in this episode: music by Tania León performed by pianist Isabel Dobarro; Claire Victoria Roberts performed by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain; Judd Greenstein performed by NOW Ensemble; Justin H.
